In what way has COVID-19 hastened the adoption of eCommerce?
As per the white paper issued by Technopak Advisors, the share of Indian e-commerce is set to grow from the current 4% of the country’s overall food and grocery, fashion, consumer electronics retail trade to 8% by 2025, even as the economic impact of COVID-19 is set to contract India’s retail market by 25% to 40% in FY21.
As per a McKinsey report, as far as online deliveries are concerned, growth of 10 years has been achieved in 8 weeks of COVID.
While Covid-19 has affected many business across the country negatively, e-commerce is growing at much faster pace. Multiple reasons are driving this adoption, starting from consumers being wary of stepping out of their houses, online orders being fulfilled faster and more efficiently, and overall digitization rate in the country. Further, with better product listings on e-commerce portals, consumers can ensure ordering of right product while reducing the need for returns.
This is probably a great opportunity for SMEs/MSMEs to broaden their reach and strengthen their business by embracing this more shift towards digitization effectively.
GS1 India is enabling SME brand owners to enhance their businesses by selling products through multiple online marketplaces.
