Describe Cybage’s 25-year-old journey – From its inception to its growth till date
‘25 years’ for many can be just a number but for us it is a glorious journey filled with dreams, ambitions, partnerships and growth. In the first year of existence we were trying to develop a product and not services to launch in the market. I was convinced that I was launching a great idea but it took us one year to realize that selling a product would be tough. In 1996 we used this product as a branding tool and ventured into offshore services. We grew at a massive rate during the peak of dotcom from 1996 to 2002. Though we had a small base and we were in a position where we could charge the customer anything we wished, we felt that we should charge the cost and build forward to give a value proportional to the customer. Since we didn’t have a lot of money to spend on marketing ourselves we wanted our excellence to do that for us. And happy customers would come back to us which became the mantra for our success.
When we started doing well we stuck to our old style of business–focus on increasing our efficiency. Eventually we decided to digitize Cybage and the entire company integrated in decision making. Last year we grew 18% and even in a time of global economic crisis we have not thought about salary cuts and layoffs.
How is Cybage contributing with its technology solutions to accelerate the recovery in this COVID situation?
Lives across the globe came to a standstill due to the COVID19 crisis. To contain the transmission a strict control over people’s movement was needed. This was a challenge for the local law enforcement bodies in the city. We believe in being socially responsible so we implemented a cloud-based Pandemic Logistics Control Management System within two days for the Pune Police quickly to facilitate inter-city, inter-district, and inter-state travel by issuing digital passes to those in essential services and emergencies. Similarly, a pharmacy tracking app was also created to report pharmacy transactions and check prescriptions in real time.
With offices moving their day-to-day work online they were in dire need of collaborative technology solutions to ensure that business was going on as usual. We enabled a lot of businesses including the health sector to move ahead in these challenging times backed by our collaborative tools, custom-built product engineering and development services.
How do you explain the necessity of a digital culture?
The pandemic has taught us one thing–the future is digital. Businesses should start implementing digitization as a priority now. But while doing so it is important that you create a digital-culture for your employees. Employees need to feel motivated to deliver seamlessly even while working remotely. Remote working requires agile work practices that are difficult to achieve but you have to start at some point. However, with remote working, communication becomes a challenge that often leads to employees feeling uncertain, doubtful and fearful. To ease this we at Cybage have implemented a few practices. Considering our employees as our biggest assets, their health and wellbeing is of top priority. We have continued to offer counselling sessions and remote consultation for health-related issues. Most of our employee engagement activities are now held virtually be it for team meetings, training, webinars or even fun activities like the recently held internal Cloud conclave and virtual singing competition.
What are the different business Trends you are observing in the New Normal?
The pandemic has brought businesses to their knees and some industries have been hit more than the others. Travel and hospitality has lost a lot of business globally but other verticals like media, healthcare, online retail and tech are relatively doing well. However, we’ve noticed that the trends that will be picking is downsizing because of the lack of funds with the customer. Another one is that customers will ask for discounts again because they are less on cash and lastly deferred payment. Customers now want to pay later as right now they don’t have money. So a quarter on quarter picture combines some losses which are temporary and some long-term. I am suspecting that our revenue decline will be between 5 and 10% Q-o-Q. On a positive side, the US Dollar is stronger, which is helping us.
What is your take in navigating the digital transformation in New Normal?
Disruptions caused by the pandemic and the changing nature of the global economy have brought a lot of focus on how an entity navigates its way around the new normal. While a lot of industries are scrambling to surf this digital wave, Cybage appreciated the value of technology early in its existence. Even before the pandemic, many organizations were still in the primary stage of the transformation; however, they have now realized that digitization cannot be ignored. The new normal requires businesses to leverage its current strengths and capabilities to build stronger partnerships and create greater growth avenues, just like our latest business mantra, Lead Your Now that aims to strive for an even faster growth rate without compromising the interests of our employees and stakeholders. One cannot wait to change tomorrow and be ahead of competitors. The transformation process has to begin today which is possible through mature business acumen that will accelerate digital transformation and growth. I believe that one has to keep up with the evolving global competition which is possible with architected technology.
